The best way to determine if someone about whom you care is involved in drug abuse is to familiarize yourself with the drug addiction symptoms which will give that person away. Once you know what the signs of drug abuse are, you will be able to distinguish them from ordinary emotional ups and downs which everyone experiences from time to time.
Unexplained Fatigue
One of the classic drug addiction symptoms is that a drug user often shows signs of severe fatigue at unusual times of the day. Drug users coming down from an amphetamine high, for example, may have literally gone for days without sleeping, and their bodies will simply give out. It may be a day before they awaken. A repetition of this pattern of being wide awake for an extended period and then sleeping for an extended period is a drug addiction symptom.
If someone who has been part of one circle of friends for a long time suddenly stops socializing with them and spends most of his or her time with another group, it may be to find someone who shares their substance abuse. Or, if someone drops all his or her friends and wants to be alone most of the time, it could be an attempt to hide a drug habit.

Drug Specific Symptoms
Drug addiction symptoms will also vary according to the types of drugs tow which someone is addicted. The signs of amphetamine abuse include euphoria, rapid speech, a loss of appetite, and insomnia. Opiates like heroin or cocaine cause a decreased sensitivity to pain, sedation, confusion, and, of course, the telltale needle tracks if the user is mainlining.
Before you confront someone about drug abuse based on what you think are drug addiction symptoms, however, do everything you can to rule out other explanations; and have a strategy prepared for the actions you will take if your suspicions are confirmed.
Why Diets Can’t Work
People who are not overweight cannot understand why some people are fat. After all if you want to lose weight all you have to do is go on a special diet and exercise more.
Unfortunately this is the way most diet plans approach peoples weight loss issues. Most weight loss plans focus on your actions. They tell you that you have to eat this but not that, you must drink only this and you have to eat by combining your foods in a certain order. You are instructed to exercise until you drop.
While many of these processes can work in the short term – they are not sustainable in the long term. These weight loss plans are generally too restrictive and they require a tremendous amount of will power. Let’s face it, if losing weight were as easy as eating less and exercising more then 100 million Americans would not be over weight.
These weight loss plans always fail to address the root of your weight issues. The root of most weight issues is the ways you think and feel create emotional issues that keep the weight on you. Your thoughts create your feelings; your feelings determine your actions. Your body changes at a cellular level based on how your feeling.
Think about it for a moment. When are you most likely to over eat? During emotionally challenging times such as being under stress, being angry, sad, fearful and even board. Over time the more you over eat due to emotional causes the more your body expects the extra food so you reach a point where you eat just to eat.

Our emotions determine our actions.
All of our actions originate first from a thought. Some of these thoughts generate strong emotional responses such as if we’re worried or frightened about something. Anyone who is overweight has emotional triggers to food.
We think of something and have an emotional response to that thought which in turn triggers an eating response. Many times we’re not even aware we doing this, it’s sort of being on automatic pilot. Think about your own triggers. Do you ever reach for food or a snack when your under stress or worried? How about if you’re lonely or sad?
Our thoughts create our emotions…
Our emotions create our body.
What’s happening inside of us creates what’s happening outside of us. There is no difference to the way our body feels to us then it actually is.
Each of us creates our own reality including our body. We believe that what is happening outside of us is what is creating the feeling within us when actually the opposite is true.
The way we feel, the thoughts we have, what we focus on makes internal changes to us on a cellular level that creates our external world.
That’s why no matter what diet we try we ultimately fail. That’s why we keep doing the same things over and over even though we know that it’s detrimental to our weight loss goals.
Diets try to change you from the outside when the only way you can be changed is from the inside. No matter what you do to lose weight you will fail unless you change yourself from the inside, nothing external can work.
The importance of focusing on what your desired out come is and believing that it has already occurred can not be over stated. Scientific studies have shown that if you monitor a persons brain activity a real event is recorded the same as an imagined event within the brain.
If a person was to look at a flag, and then close their eyes and imagine a flag their brain waves would be identical. The same neuro networks are activated, the same neurons are fired.
The brain cannot distinguish between real or imagined events. Your brain cannot distinguish between what’s happening outside to your own internal thoughts. Your brain cannot distinguish between what you see and what you imagine or pretend to see. Now take this a step further.
When you close your eyes and picture yourself what do you see? If you modify that picture, your reality will bend to that image.
So why is that important? Your thoughts, beliefs and intents create your reality, your outcome. What you think about you body creates your body.
Your thoughts alone can alter your body. Your thoughts create emotions and if the emotions are strong you create memories.
Your hypothalamus is a gland that is rich in fibers and synaptic connections and it controls the functions of the body such as blood pressure, heartbeat, metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. The way that it accomplishes this is that your hypothalamus is a chemical factory that creates peptides which are small chained amino acids. These peptides are created based on our emotions.
Different neuro hormones are created based on the emotion we are feeling: Joy, love, happiness, fear, hate and all other emotions that we actually experience or imaging create peptides. At the moment that we experience an emotion, real or imagined hormones are released into the body.
Every cell in your body has receptors for the various hormones that are released. The hormones that are released into the body are attached to the cell through the receptor. This is very similar to a key going into a lock. Once attached the cell will change based on the hormone that has attached to it which ultimately is determined by your emotions.
Each cell is alive with its own consciousness and over time your cell will create more receptors for the predominate hormone being released.
The more receptors for a given emotion that is created will cause the body to create situations the will satisfy the chemical cravings of our cells. The more you experience joy the more joy receptors will be activated within your cells.
The more joy receptors the more your body will create situations that will cause you to feel joyful. This holds true for your weight as well.
The more you feel fat and over weight the more that those receptors become activated thereby causing your body to react in a way that will keep you overweight. Every function of the body is influenced by your emotional state.
In order to break this you must first change way you think about your body. Then as you become aware of the negative thought patterns that have been contributing to your negative body image you need to choose different thoughts. Most overweight people have thoughts like:
- I will never be able to lose weight
- If I look at food I gain 5 pounds
- I’m not desirable
- I’m not good enough
- I hate my body
It is impossible to lose weight and keep the weight off if you have a negative body image.
Changing your thought patterns is simple to do. Simply focus on things that you do like about your body. You could say to yourself:
- I have nice eyes
- I feel strong
- I feel thinner today
- I love how my body is going to look
- My children love me
The whole point is to raise your emotional level; you want to feel good about you and your body.
Another useful tool is the “Wouldn’t it be nice game” When you’re not in a good place emotionally simply say to yourself “Wouldn’t it be nice if____ :
- I lost 20 pounds
- I could fit into that dress
- I could get into a size 6
By playing the “Wouldn’t it be nice game” you immediately change your emotional state and feel more positive.
By changing your negative thoughts concerning your body you will change your emotions. You will have a more positive approach to your body and to life. By using this approach you will not have the struggle that you have come to expect when attempting to lose weight.
So start raising your emotional state today!

Remember that the hardest part of getting help for addiction is in admitting that you have a problem to begin with. After that, there are many people who are willing to help you with your drug addiction treatment, but the first step is deciding to help yourself.
Smoking Can Prime the Brain for Later Addiction
An article entitled “Adolescent Smokers Have A Greater Risk Of Developing Alcohol-use Disorders Than Nonsmokers” by Richard A. Grucza, and Kevin W. Chen revealed research findings that are problematic at best. Perhaps the most disturbing was this: research suggests that smoking “primes” the brain for later addiction to alcohol and perhaps other drugs. When added to the following statistic, this information is very disconcerting: alcohol and smoking, when considered independently or in combination, account for more than 20 percent of the annual fatalities in the United States.
Alcohol-Use Disorders
It is common knowledge that many people started smoking and drinking when they were teenagers. According to research findings, moreover, smokers, especially adolescent smokers, unmistakably have a greater susceptibility to alcohol-use disorders (AUDs) than do non-smokers. Therefore, the earlier a person starts to smoke, the more vulnerable he or she may be to subsequent alcohol abuse, alcoholism, alcohol intoxication, and alcohol withdrawal.
Can Teens Quit Smoking Anytime They Choose?
Approximately 25 years ago I had a job as a child-care worker and worked with emotionally handicapped teens. I remember some of the older patients who were allowed to smoke tell me that they could quit smoking anytime they made up their mind to do so. My response to them, even then, was that this may in fact be true, but the longer they smoke the stronger the habit will become. At some point, moreover, the habit will be so compelling that quitting smoking will be extremely difficult. The point: many teenagers who start smoking see this as “no big deal.” Based on the current research, however, they couldn’t be more incorrect.
A Blueprint for Disease and Devastation
If smoking does in fact “prime” the brain for addiction to alcohol and potentially other drugs later in life, what are the consequences? Basically this: teens who smoke, no matter how “innocent” the intent, may be inadvertently constructing and following a blueprint that leads to the misery, broken relationships, financial ruin, psychological problems, and the physical diseases that are characteristic of long-tern drug and alcohol abuse.
Fifty to Eighty Percent of Alcoholics Smoke
According to another article entitled “Long-term Tobacco Use Associated With Dulled Thinking And Lower IQ, Study Finds,” researchers at the University of Michigan found that both smoking and alcoholism result in diminished thinking ability. The Michigan researchers also discovered that 50 to 80% of alcoholics smoke. If 50 to 80 percent of alcoholics smoke, and both smoking and alcoholism negatively impact the brain’s higher functions, then most alcoholics are doing a double whammy on their mental proficiency. Pardon the pun, but this is a sobering thought, especially when teens and young adults are the ones who are doing the smoking and the drinking.
Conclusion
Let us keep in mind that for all intents and purposes every addict starts out as an occasional user who has made an intentional and conscious decision to involve himself or herself with a specific substance or activity. As time goes by and as the person continues to partake of the substance or activity, however, the person makes a transition from being a voluntary to a compulsive user. As a result, and in conjunction with the findings from the two studies outlined above, people, especially our youth, need to be educated and made aware of the risks and devastation than can result from smoking, alcohol abuse, and alcoholism.

During the first few sugar-free days you may experience headaches, fatigue, depression, drowsiness, skin eruptions, and mucus or throat discomfort.
Some of these symptoms, especially the mood swings, fatigue and drowsiness, probably occur on a daily basis when you’re still eating a high-sugar diet, as the blood sugar rises and falls – but you don’t usually blame it on the way you eat. When you kick the sugar habit you will be very aware that these symptoms are being caused by your recent dietary change, and you should look forward to the day when you will be completely free of them.
A caffeine withdrawal headache might be quite painful, and can last for 2 days or more, while sugar withdrawal symptoms are usually milder but may last for a week or two. Some people may experience little or no discomfort at all, and will simply receive all the benefits of a no-sugar diet almost immediately.
And the benefits are huge – better health, better moods, a feeling of increased vitality and clearer thinking.
Unfortunately, the thought of sugar withdrawal symptoms are a powerful deterrent to healthy change. People often think they’ll feel much worse than they really will, or they think they’ll be miserable much longer. Part of this reasoning is actually caused by the “stinking thinking” created by your addiction.
Knowing how long your symptoms will last will give you the strength to commit yourself to moving through the withdrawal phase towards health. You don’t want to give in to the nagging symptoms that are begging you for that donut just a few hours before the symptoms would be gone for good.
For this reason, it’s important to mark out the time when you know you won’t feel your best. Think of it as a voluntary case of the flu, and commit to working your way through it. In a few days it will be over.
Does that mean you’re free of sugar cravings for good? No.
As mentioned earlier, the hard part is not giving up sugar. It’s staying free of sugar once you’ve gone through the first few weeks. Your mild withdrawal symptoms at first will actually keep you focused and remind you of your goal to start a healthy diet.
It’s later, when you’re feeling healthy and energized, when the lure of “just one” treat can seem like a harmless indulgence. To make sure you stay on your new, healthy diet, you’ll need a plan that will prevent you from sliding back into your old, unhealthy eating choices.
Drug and alcohol addiction are becoming increasingly prevalent in the United States. The line of celebrities entering and leaving rehab (often several times) seems endless. Additionally, young people are exposed to more than 1,000 beer and wine commercials on television each year. They also see several thousand incidents where drinking is fictional and glamorized. As daily stressors increase in people’s lives, combined with the easy availability of alcohol offering a quick fix, more and more people are turning to the bottle to blot out their problems. Addiction statistics are staggering and a somber wake up call that something needs to change.
It is estimated that more than 15 million Americans are alcohol dependent. This does not just mean that they drink; it means that they can not get through the day without a drink. Of that 15 million, 500,000 of those alcohol addicts are between the ages of 9 and 12. This is due, in part, to the nearly $2 billion advertising dollars that the liquor industry spends each year to encourage alcohol consumption. Americans readily respond to this encouragement by spending more than $90 billion dollars on alcohol each year.
Drinking and driving is a deadly combination. Everyone knows that is it dangerous and can kill, but apparently those facts are widely ignored because in 50% of all driving fatalities, alcohol is involved. It is estimated that in the United States alone, someone is killed in a traffic accident with alcohol as a component every 30 minutes.
One of the worst parts of the way that alcohol is freely promoted is its effect on our young people. Students each year spend $5.5 billion on alcohol. This is more than they spend on sodas, tea, coffee or books combined. 56% of children in grades 5 through 12 report that the advertising by alcohol companies encourages them to drink.
On the job addiction can be devastating. 6.6% of employees who hold full time jobs report that they drink heavily. This means that they drink five or more drinks per event or on five or more days in the previous 30 days. But what is truly disheartening is that 12.2% of heavy drinkers as defined here (this is the highest percentage) are the unemployed adults who are between the ages of 26 and 34.
It should also be noted here one of the most frightening statistics yet. In the year 2000, nearly 7 million people were binge drinkers. The thing that is most striking about this group is that they ranged in age from 12 to 20 years of age. This means that one in five people who are under the legal drinking age were binge drinkers.
In America, alcohol is the number one drug problem. Addiction statistics show that 43% of Americans have had to deal with alcoholism in their families. The list goes on and on, but the message is clear. Alcohol can begin a vicious cycle of addiction with dire consequences. The alcoholic hurts friends, family and themselves. There is no upside to addiction to alcohol.

Times are tough with terrorism, war, the high price of oil, and endless inflation. It’s not always easy to keep ourselves afloat. Our lives are so filled with responsibilities, concerns, worry, fear, needs and desires that our figurative ‘cups’ are literally spilling over. The more we struggle to fit into our schedules, the more stressful life becomes, the more likely we are to develop habits, compulsions, addictions, fears and become physically rundown. Habits and addictions are symptoms of deficiency and they can be overcome. Hypnotherapy, done by a qualified and skillful Hypnotherapist is the most thorough and expedient way to accomplish your goals of reclaiming your healthy self.
Over the last several years many of my clients have reported that they covered as much if not more ground after a few sessions of hypnotherapy than they had with years of using traditional therapy. There is a good reason for this. Our conscious mind it is the rational, logical part of our minds, it contains and operates what is known as the critical factor. The critical factor is the protective or filtering mechanism of our beliefs that must be bypassed in order to accept any new suggestions that conflict with our existing beliefs. The premise of hypnotherapy is to ‘bypass the critical factor and the establishment of selective thinking’, such as,” I am now a nonsmoker.” The subconscious mind does not think or analyze and the conscious mind cannot feel. Therefore to make the changes we desire, we must use our subconscious mind.
Regardless of whether we had a good childhood or not, we each take on impressions and misconceptions that are not always correct. As children we simply did not have all of the information available. Traumatic impressions or events may in fact include physical, verbal or mental abuse or simply be the misconceptions of a child. In each circumstance the memory remains with us in our subconscious mind; not only is the event stored in our subconscious mind, so too are the emotions attached to the memory. Sometimes the incident or idea is not initially a traumatic one, but given the right circumstances and/or enough reinforcement it can develop into real and problematic symptoms later on. For instance if a child grew up in a single parent environment, that child may feel lonely and abandoned and may think his parent doesn’t love him. But the truth is the parent may be struggling to make ends meet, is desperately trying to hold down a job, get more education to improve the living situation and create greater income to provide more for the child.
As a society we have a long tradition of suppressing feelings. When we ignore our feelings it’s either because we’ve been taught to be stoic or we’re simply too overwhelmed to pay attention to our own needs. As children we may have been made to feel bad, even guilty for expressing our feelings, and in some cases expressing sadness, anger or fear may have lead to punishment. In some families children were taught not to be too optimistic because that could lead to disappointment. This type of modeling leads to negative thinking and may even lead to depression.
Whatever the reason, in denying our feelings, we deny our true nature. Feelings are nature’s built in guidance system. Even negative feelings such as anger or fear have a purpose. They are there to guide us and are just as valuable as our five senses. The system is designed to let us know which of our needs aren’t being fulfilled and to motivate us to take action to fulfill them.
In Dr. Emotos book, “The Hidden Messages in Water,” he describes an interesting experiment with rice. A family put rice into three glass jars, and every day for a month said, “Thank you” to one jar and “You fool” to the second bottle, and the third jar was simply ignored. They tracked how the rice changed over time. After a month, the rice that was ignored rotted before the others. It seems that being ridiculed is actually not as damaging as being ignored.” The most damaging form of behavior is withholding your attention,” writes Emoto, confirming that even negative attention is better than none. Parents who tend to lock their feelings in may lock their children out. Young children are so eager to be loved they will mistakenly accept negative behavior as love because they don’t know the difference. Those children are then left with feelings they don’t understand and without healthy coping mechanisms.
Additionally, a tremendous amount of energy is used holding those feelings in that could be better spent, and we do this unconsciously until our energy wears out. Imagine how difficult it is to hold a beach ball under the surface of the water. It keeps trying to float, and once we let go, it flies into the air light as a feather. Similarly, once we reached our limit, our emotions fly outward sometimes uncontrollably and often inappropriately. For those of us who experience difficulties, it’s likely that our feelings have been off limits for so long we’ve become deaf to the voice within us.
Those voices are longing to be heard. Have you ever been struck out of the blue, when a sense of emptiness suddenly moves into your consciousness? When we cannot consciously recognize the origin of a feeling, we may tend to seek comfort in a bottle of alcohol, or pills, in smoking, eating, shopping or gambling. The emotions that we carry within us originate from three different places: the past, the present, and concerns about the future. The problem is that often we are carrying around a hefty load of emotions concerning the past that just aren’t useful to us anymore. The problem behavior is a way of coping with those feelings. When we pay attention to our feelings and understand them we can express them appropriately. Hypnotherapy is an ideal way to get in touch with our true feelings. Once we address and undo some or all of what is causing the feeling, the problem behavior can then be removed, because it no longer serves a purpose, ultimately creating new insights, positive feelings and healthy behavior.
Finally, not all hypnosis is created equal. It is true that knowledge is power but knowing what to do at the proper time is the key!
