Why should you learn about glycemic index based diet system?
Glycemic index (GI) based weight control systems are the only ones which have been scientifically proven to reduce the appetite and keep you satisfied longer while allowing you to manage your weight. Moreover the low GI diets help people with type one and type twodiabetes improve their blood glucose levels.

Glycemic Index is what?

Glycemic index is an indication of how fast the carbs in any food will be absorbed into your blood stream as glucose.

What is the effect of high blood sugar?

Muscle can use both sugar and fats (lipids) but the brain can only burn glucose using oxygen (aerobically). Note, the brain needs just the right amount of glucose in the blood stream to function effectively.
Too much glucose leads to becoming hyper and too little blood glucose makes you tired and drowsy and if it goes too low you’ll faint.

How does insulin control blood sugar level?
Insulin is a hormone which is secreted by the pancreas and manages blood sugar levels. When the blood glucose level goes up, the pancreas pumps Insulin into the blood stream which makes most cells to metabolize glucose rather fats and to store the glucose as glycogen in the liver and muscle. This lowers the blood glucose level.

Is there a good way to eat?
The glycemic index values published are based on eating single foods and thereforewhen you eat a real meal of different foods, the glycemic index is not the same as the average of all the foods you eat. If you start with low glycemic index foods and slowly go to the higher GI foods you end up affecting your blood sugar much less than if you eat the high glycemic index foods first. So eat the protein and low GI vegetables such as broccoli first and then move to the higher glycemic index portions of your meal. And of course eating slowly is the best way of eating and allows you to stop when you have eaten enough.

Therefore choose a low glycemic index diet and eat slowly while increasing your activity and you’ll notice that your weight will start going down while you become more healthy and are satisfied with smaller portions.
Understand to check with your MD and/or nutritionist before trying any new weight reduction systems. Also, note that no weight loss systems is a silver bullet and a weight control systems which may work for you may not work for someone else. But in general glycemic index based diet system is one of the better weight reduction systems for most especially if you are prediabetic or obese.
