Obesity And Binge Eating

Obesity is a condition that has become a major health concern affecting many individuals in the United States. This condition refers to the build-up of excess body fat that may impair health conditions. Obese individuals are prone to health risks like cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, sleep apnea, and many more. These health hazards have prompted many people to include a weight-loss program in their lifestyles. However many health experts advice individuals to understand the cause weight-gain is essential in preventing the additional cases of obesity.

Understanding the cause of obesity might enable overweight individuals to treat their health problems. According to clinical studies, one probable cause of obesity among Americans is an eating disorder called binge eating. It is an eating disorder whereby individuals have a strong addiction for food. The cause of this condition is still unclear but experts suggest stress, anxiety, and depression can trigger compulsive eating disorder. Individuals with this condition crave for food even though they do not need to eat that much. They end up eating too much and not realizing that they should not once they are fool. Individuals with binge eating disorder may gain weight overtime and have obesity problems. However, there are some individuals who have this condition and have normal weight.

Eating too much is one of the symptoms of binge eating disorder. Eating when not hungry or eating while being sad, angry, lonely, or bored can also be a symptom of this condition. After binging, one might feel upset, guilty, or depressed. These individuals may also feel alone because they are embarrassed of about how much they eat. Eating in secret is also a symptom of binge eating disorder.

The common treatment for binge eating disorder may include the use of medication like antidepressant pill or counseling or a combination of the two. Recent treatment for this condition includes cognitive-behavioral therapy which teaches patients to monitor their eating habits and respond properly to difficult situations. Treatment for this condition may last for extended period to fully recover. Individuals with this condition which includes depression, obesity, and other conditions that may be associated with being overweight.

Health experts advise individuals to include exercise and nutritious diet in their lifestyle to eliminate depression and anxiety. Physical activities promotes the release of endorphins. Endorphins are substances that is released by the brain and is the body’s natural pain-reliever. These substance may elevate the mood and promote a state of bliss. Many health specialists refer to this phenomenon as the runner’s high. When this state well-being is accomplished the use for antidepressant pill may not be necessary. For overweight or obese individuals, it is never too late to engage in regular exercise and healthy diets. Exercise is good for different people of all ages, sex, and weight. It is necessary to maintain improved overall health and enhanced well-being. Individuals who decide to include a regular program of physical activity should consult doctors and other health professionals for advice. This is important because a lot of individuals tend to workout too much or workout improperly, which may do more harm than good. Understanding proper workout and including a healthy diet in one’s lifestyle may lead to improved health and overall well-being and therefore eliminate mental disorders that may lead to eating disorders like binge eating.

A Look At Obesity

If you thought being obese is being the target of fun, it only tells the part of the story about dangers and predicaments obesity exposes you to. Obesity is no more a simple result of overeating-lead-to-overweight case. To quote the American Obesity Association’s words, “It is now recognized that obesity is a serious, chronic disease. No human condition — not race, religion, gender, ethnicity or disease state — compares to obesity in prevalence and prejudice, mortality and morbidity, sickness and stigma.”

Obesity is a trojan horse. It brings a battalion of ailments, which are most detrimental to our health. To name a few, following are the complications that could arise out being obese.

1. Hypertension

2. Diabetes (Type-2)

3. Coronary heart disease

4. Stroke

5. Gallbladder disease

6. Osteoarthritis

7. Asthma

8. Sleep apnea and respiratory problems

9. Some cancers (endometrial, breast and colon)

10.High levels of cholesterol

This is an unending list, where each of the above ailments are capable of creating other complications, where no medication without side effect, could be comfortably used. Prevention is the best cure for obesity. How to achieve this?

Shake Your Head

A doctor once told my friend, who is obese that it is very easy to lose weight. My friend became very interested and asked him to suggest a way. The doctor calmly replied that just shake your head from left to right, maybe ten times a day! My friend became very curious. What is the idea behind this? He asked. Doctor calmly replied, “Whenever anyone offers you something to eat, shake your head from left to right”. Simple, isn’t it? It is simple, but it requires discipline, which is not simple. But then, habit makes discipline. Avoiding junk food and fast food must be done with a discipline.

Is Being Overweight Obesity

Obesity is not just due to eating disorder unlike overweight. Obesity is hereditary and it is measured by Body Mass Index or BMI. Adults over the BMI of 30 Kg/m2 is considered are considered obese and any one with reading between 25 and 29.9 kg/m2 is overweight, not obese.

Obesity is posing the biggest threat to Americans and the numbers are rising with each year. There are around 35% obese Americans according to a survey. This is also draining the state exchequer heavily to the tune of $25 billions a year.

What Causes Obesity

There are more reasons than one. Having obsession to eating more calories than you can burn off, how active are you, what you eat and whether you have an inherited streak in your genes, all these determine your chances of becoming obese. In any case it is due to the over accumulation of fats.

Is There An Anti-Obesity Plan?

There are many quick-fix plans being promoted by the so called dieticians which are not regulated by FDA. However, burning fat by increased physical activity and a changed lifestyle in addition to changed eating habits to healthier foods must gradually show results.

Although fat at hips is not quicker to harm you than the accumulation around waist, there is no guarantee that you are absolutely safe. Talk to your trainer and dietician, pull-up your socks and get going. After all, it’s your life.

Is Your Metabolism Broken?

Is Your Metabolism Broken?

As the founder of the KimkinsDietI’m asked many questions about the low calorie low carb Kimkins Diet. Without a doubt the most common question is “But won’t lower calories ruin my metabolism?” Not a chance. Why do people stop losing after several diets? There’s a variety of reasons that come into play.

First, people tend to be a little sloppier in later diet attempts. Whether carbs or calories, there may be too much “guessing” or “forgetting” going on, bites here and there don’t get counted, quantities that are under estimated.

Second, how old were you when your metabolism wasn’t “broken”? Our body clock naturally begins dropping around age 40 and continues dropping 10% each decade. This means the 1500 calories you could eat at age 25 and still lose, isn’t going to work at age 50. At least not in the same way. Chances are you were also a bit more active 25 years ago.

Third, we need to compare apples with apples and notoranges. The weight lost on a traditional diet will be moderate at best. The dogma of “safely” losing 1-2 lbs a week is in no danger of being threatened!

However, the weight lost on a low carb diet will easily double that number, particularly if it’s a low calorie low carb diet like Kimkins.Fortunately, TV shows like The Biggest Loser and Celebrity Fit Club have shown us that it’s entirely safe and desirable to lose 5, 10, 15 lbs a week if obese.

A tip to keep in mind is that your body will never lose more quickly than is safe. This is why a person with 100 lbs to lose might lose 10 lbs in a week, while a person with only 10 lbs to lose will not lose the entire 10 lbs in one week.

Our metabolism is a living, dynamic system. Throughout the day it fluctuates depending on our body clock and activities. New dieters are often afraid of “ruining” their metabolism by dropping calories. Hogwash! Does your metabolism drop when calories drop? Yes, but not to any great degree. Want proof? Look at the Success Stories at the Kimkins website! Look at the amazing losses each week on The Biggest Loser.

Ask yourself this. Knowing that your metabolism drops to its lowest level while you sleep at night, do you set your alarm for 2 am to eat and keep your metabolism high? Of course not! When you wake in the morning, your metabolism automatically rises as soon as your eyes open, get out of bed, take a shower, get the kids ready for school and get yourself together for your own day.

If you’re still on the fence about whether lower calories means ruined metabolism, keep in mind that gastric bypass patients are intended to eat around 500 calories a day after surgery. It’s the entire purpose of the surgery. Those that follow the 500 calorie instructions lose extremely fast. Those who can’t commit and pick easily digestible high calorie foods like mashed potatoes, candy, soda, chips, alcohol and ice cream don’t lose or may even gain.

If you’re considering a diet don’t be afraid of losing quickly. Do be afraid of the side effects of obesity. It only take a few extra pounds before developing Type 2 diabetes and once you have it, it’s for life. Your cells never regain their ability to use insulin.

Naturally I’d like to suggest the Kimkins Diet for anyone who’s serious about losing weight. But the Kimkins program is strict, it’s not for sissies. It’s for people who want to lose now.

If you don’t pick Kimkins, please find something. Obesity is dangerous and expensive. Call a local hospital and ask what the typical hospital bill is for a heart attack or diabetic limb amputation.

Is Overeating An Addiction?

People dealing with obesity can now benefit from bariatric surgery. This specialized procedure is only offered for those patients who are morbidly obese, and need to have this surgery to avoid life-threatening complications. Not all overweight people can choose to have this surgery though since it is a major procedure that presents significant risks and side effects. The procedure would also require permanent changes in a person’s lifestyle.

For a number of weight loss surgery patients who have undergone bariatric or any other weight loss surgery, giving up food may mean drinking alcohol, or even having compulsive shopping. Researchers call this behavioral shift an “addiction transfer”, which means transferring one compulsive act (in their case overeating) and replace it with another in order to numb emotions or fill an inner void. Mental health experts said that since these bariatric procedures have been more common nowadays, they are seeing an increase in cases of alcoholism, obsessive shopping, gambling, and promiscuity. They also noted that the problem with people who had surgery has not been attending therapy to address their issues behind their eating disorders. Most of them are emotional eaters, and when it has been taken away, they will be left with the thought of what to do with their emotions.

Cases have been reviewed with two post-surgery patients that went on air with Oprah Winfrey regarding their state. One woman became an alcoholic two years after her operation. With binge eating gone as a coping mechanism, she began drinking up to 10 martinis a day to soothe stress. Even if she lost 150 pounds, the negative feelings that added to her obesity still lurked. Another woman who lost 200 pounds because of surgery revealed that she has been having affairs as a way to distract herself from her unhappy marriage. This can trigger depression that some post-operative patients try to “self-medicate” with alcohol, shopping, or smoking cigarettes.

A psychologist further stated that another paradox for this issue would be that the positive step of dropping pounds after surgery can be stressful in itself. He said that dynamics can change after one starts to reduce weight and putting the next foot forward. Relationships can shift as one puts balance in his life, and the lifestyle one would have requires adjustment.

Experts emphasize that bariatric surgery does not cause addiction. This kind of surgery has been around for 30 years, and there is no sufficient data linking surgery and addiction in a conclusive manner. Mental health workers suggests that after surgery, patients should attend a support group or go into therapy sessions. A post-surgery patient shares that after losing 200 pounds from his operation last April, he started dealing with anxiety issues for about two months. But with therapy and medications, he felt a lot better.

If anyone is interested in having any kind of weight loss surgery, make sure to know more information than just the basics. Take time to evaluate one’s physical and emotional state before having an operation. After surgery, take time to relax and enrol oneself in therapy sessions or counseling groups to be able to take away the remaining negative thoughts that might resurface in the future.

Keeping Your Family Healthy

Obesity is one of the biggest problems in the United States today and many families don’t follow regular exercise programs. It is often said that the family that plays together, stays together. This couldn’t be more true in the case of family fitness. Getting your family off the sofa and encouraging them to get moving can be a simple task.

Pay attention to what everyone in the family likes to do. If your sons and your husband like football, suggest a weekend excursion to the park for a game of flag football. If your daughter is an avid jogger, head to the trails. Even if your kids are more into video games than outside play, consider looking “dance pad” games that can be used on popular game consoles, which have been suggested to help in the weight loss process. This brings a whole new meaning to playing video games, and can actually be fun for you too. It’s not exercise, it’s play!

Your family’s fitness not only means exercise, but a change in the kitchen as well. It is time to throw out the chips and cookies and make healthy alternative choices. Snacks such as carrot and celery sticks, apples, seedless grapes, pretzels, air popped popcorn, and graham crackers make excellent choices. If available, your children will grab these snacks without a second thought. Fill your cabinets with these healthier snacks and you might find yourself surprised that your family doesn’t even notice the difference! Replacing sodas with bottled water and organic fruit juices while you’re at it can help your cause. Don’t buy diet sodas – they’re loaded with sodium!

Subtle changes in your family’s eating habits can have long lasting effects. It is never too late to make a healthy change for you and your family. But be discreet! If you tell your children that you’re making a change to the family eating habits, they are less likely to accept it, rather than not even questioning the change when grabbing a snack.

Taking care of your family is important, and family fitness is the way to do that. You are your children’s greatest example. If you follow a steady, healthy pattern, your children are just as likely to continue this pattern once they are on their own. Just don’t forget to make the habit fun! Everyone is far more likely to be eager and accepting of the change if it is fun.

Lower Your Cholesterol Levels, Naturally

Cholesterol is a fatty substance present in the human body, 80% of which is manufactured by the liver. The other 20% comes from your diet such as meat, eggs and dairy products. We have always considered cholesterol to be bad. But that is not the case; there are two types of cholesterol, good cholesterol – HDL (High-density lipoproteins) and bad cholesterol – LDL (Low-density lipoproteins). High levels of LDL cholesterol present in the body enter the inner walls of the arteries and harden it, leading to coronary artery disease. Similarly, high levels of HDL cholesterol minimize the harmful effects of LDL cholesterol. Some measurements you can keep in mind to maintain healthy LDL cholesterol level.

Less than 100 mg/dL would be optimal
100 to 129 mg/dL is near optimal/ above optimal
130 to 159 mg/dL is borderline high
160 to 189 mg/dL is considered high
190 mg/dL and above is very high

Regular check up or screening of your cholesterol level is very important. It is recommended for men and women of 20 years or above to get the test done every five years. This kind of screening helps to keep your health in check. It also helps if the patient has a family history of diseases like diabetes, obesity or cardiovascular disease.

Tips to remember

Do your exercises regularly to keep your heart healthy. It also helps in burning out the excess fat you have been carrying around.

Avoid trans fatty acids like French fries, cookies, cakes and many other fried fast foods.

Consume fewer carbohydrates by avoiding sugar, flour, potatoes and white rice. Avoid food which contains too much cholesterol like egg yolk, liver, kidney, brain etc. Stop smoking, it increases HDL levels by seven points.

Natural Ways to Increase HDL

Red wine consumed in reasonable quantity gives a positive result. It contains antioxidants such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir that slows down oxidation of HDL and LDL cholesterol. By drinking wine HDL level does not shoot up, but it contains higher level of various types of blood fats, thus making it useful for the body.

Drinking orange juice every day increases HDL level by nearly 21%. This is possible due to the presence of flavonoids.

Kidney and red beans are another source to increase HDL level. They contain low-glycemic carbohydrates which do not require insulin spikes during digestion.

Eating fish several times a week is very useful in increasing HDL level as it contains omega-3 fatty acids. Fishes like sardine, salmon, sea bass, herring and many more are some of the sources of good cholesterol. If you do not like fish, you can have fish oil supplements.

Olive oil contains the highest number of mono-saturated fats. Having 1-2 teaspoons in your daily diet would help you tremendously.

Oat bran lowers LDL and increases HDL. Studies have shown that two ounces of oat bran per day helps in reducing 16% LDL and 15% increase in HDL.

Half raw onion per day increases HDL level by 30%.

Soy products increase HDL level thereby decreasing LDL.

Soluble fiber found in fruits like apples, grapes and citrus fruits are useful in increasing HDL level.

Guggul lipid a native herb used mainly for Ayurvedic medicine also helps in maintaining healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Green tea lowers LDL levels by increasing HDL levels.

Eat more fiber and include raw garlic in your diet, these are very useful in lowering cholesterol levels.

What Causes Type 2 Diabetes

What causes someone to develop type 2 diabetes? It is well-known that type 2 diabetes develops from insulin resistance, but what causes insulin resistance in the first place?

Insulin is used in the body to “unlock” the cells so that glucose in the bloodstream can pass from the blood into the cells. The problem is not a lack of insulin but the inability in type 2 diabetics to use its unlocking properties. Insulin is also the main fat-building hormone. In type 2 diabetes the fat-building properties continue to function while the unlocking properties are impaired. So the daily battle for blood sugar control and weight control are battles in their war against their insulin resistance.

But what made them insulin resistant in the first place?

Obesity is the number one factor (though not the only factor) for developing insulin resistance. It begins with the effect of obesity on the liver. Normally, the liver only produces glucose in the absence of food, such as in fasting. Recent research now seems to indicate that there is a second signal aside from the fasting response that triggers glucose production from the liver.

This second signal or trigger is more active in obese people, even when they are not fasting. A high-fat diet also contributes to the activation of the signal. As obesity does not go away easily or quickly, the triggering factors become nearly constant over time. The production of glucose from the liver goes on continually. The constant production of glucose from the liver is a significant factor leading to insulin resistance.

Once again the news has its good side as well as a discouraging side. It may be discouraging to learn that being overweight is what triggered one’s development of diabetes.

On the other hand, the good news here is that most people can prevent or avoid developing type 2 diabetes by controlling their weight. Avoid obesity and you avoid developing the second signal that triggers the over-production of glucose from the liver that contributes to insulin resistance. A diet lower in fat, which may help control weight, also lowers the activation of the trigger signal.

There is also some good news left for type 2 diabetics. It is clear that people who have developed insulin resistance, though they cannot cure the disease, they can mitigate its most damaging effects by maintaining a healthy body weight.

This will reduce their insulin resistance and increase their blood sugar control. Maintaining a healthy weight should be emphasized in any treatment for type 2 diabetics who are overweight. Which is of course the battle they are engaged in every day, not only for the sake of their weight but their insulin resistance and glucose control.
